Almost The Friendliest Girl In School
I once lost “Most Friendly” by a handful of votes. And I’m still thinking about it.
I recorded an audio version of the “essay” part of this post as well, in case you’d like to listen.
Today’s post includes some musings on my history of being “friendly”, a new If You Asked Me column where I share non expert advice for a question I received this week, and a few new favorite things.
I’ve always been a runner up kind of girl. One of my earliest memories of second place? The Little Miss Firecracker pageant in my small town. I was 4 years old.
To be fair, I had no business being a pageant girl. I was shy during the interview, lacked any notable talents, and mostly remember loving the ride on top of the convertible in the 4th of July parade. Again, I was 4. Thankfully, it didn’t shape my future self, and if anything, it became a good party story.
My husband likes to tease that I only got the 2nd place ribbon because my grandfather’s company sponsored the pageant. He’s probably not wrong. Ha!
Because nothing says ‘1st runner up in a small town pageant’ like a Playboy bunny decal on your parade car. (For the record, this was a friend of a friend’s car, not my family’s, though no one seemed remotely concerned.) The 80s were a vibe.
